Reflection: Halfway Check-In

Reaching the halfway point of the WordPress Credits program has been a valuable learning experience. During this first part of the program, I have gained a better understanding of how the WordPress open-source community works and how people from different backgrounds collaborate to improve the platform.

Progress so far

I chose the Polyglots team because I am interested in localization and making technology more accessible to people around the world. My contribution project focuses on supporting the Spanish-speaking community by understanding and participating in WordPress translation efforts.

Since defining my project, I have explored the contribution resources, learned more about the Polyglots team’s responsibilities, and connected with the global WordPress community through Slack. I have also documented my experience through reflection posts on my personal website.

These activities have helped me understand that contributing to an open-source project involves more than technical skills. Communication, collaboration, consistency, and following community guidelines are also important.

Challenges and obstacles

One of my main challenges has been understanding the different tools, guidelines, and workflows involved in contributing to WordPress. Since this is my first experience participating in this type of global open-source community, I have needed time to become familiar with its processes.

Another challenge has been balancing the program with my university responsibilities and other commitments. I have handled this by organizing my time, reviewing the available documentation, and progressing step by step.

Although I have made progress, I recognize that I still need more practical experience with the translation workflow.

What is still ahead?

For the second half of the program, I want to move from learning about the contribution process to becoming more actively involved.

My next goals are:

  • Become more familiar with the Spanish translation guidelines and Polyglots workflow.
  • Identify opportunities to contribute actual Spanish translations.
  • Participate more actively in community discussions.
  • Learn how translation suggestions are reviewed and approved.
  • Continue documenting my progress and learning from other contributors.

Final reflection

The biggest difference between my expectations and my actual progress is that I initially thought contributing would mainly involve completing specific tasks. However, I have learned that becoming part of an open-source community also requires understanding its culture, communicating with other contributors, and building relationships.

For the second half of the program, practical guidance, feedback from experienced contributors, and opportunities to participate in real translation activities would help me the most.

I am looking forward to continuing this journey, improving my skills, and making a meaningful contribution to the WordPress community.
