As part of the WordPress Credits program, I have started my journey as a contributor to the WordPress Polyglots team. This experience has allowed me to explore how an international open-source community works and how contributors collaborate to make WordPress accessible to people around the world.
My First Experience with the Polyglots Handbook
Reading the Polyglots team’s documentation for the first time helped me understand that translation involves much more than converting words from one language to another.
The team follows guidelines and terminology standards to ensure consistency, accuracy, and a good user experience across different languages.
I learned about the importance of understanding the context of each translation, following established guidelines, and respecting the collaborative review process.
As someone studying Computer Systems Engineering, I found it interesting to see how documentation, quality assurance, and collaboration play an important role in maintaining a global technology platform.
My First Contribution
My first step toward contributing was joining the WordPress global Slack community and participating in the Polyglots discussions.
I introduced myself to the community, explained my interest in Spanish translation and localization, and asked for guidance on how to get started.
This experience helped me understand the importance of connecting with experienced contributors, asking questions, and learning from the community before making changes to the project.
I am continuing to work toward my first translation contribution by becoming familiar with the translation platform and the team’s guidelines.
Communication and Collaboration
One of my first impressions of the WordPress community is how open and collaborative it is.
Contributors from different countries and backgrounds share knowledge, answer questions, and help newcomers understand the contribution process.
I also appreciate the asynchronous communication model, particularly through Slack and the team’s documentation. It allows contributors to participate and collaborate even when they are not online at the same time.
Challenges and What I Hope to Improve
One of the initial challenges is understanding the different tools, workflows, and standards used by the Polyglots team.
My next goal is to become more familiar with the translation platform, identify suitable strings to translate, and submit my first Spanish translation for community review.
I also want to become more confident participating in discussions and collaborating with experienced contributors.
Final Reflection
This first experience has helped me understand that contributing to open-source software is not only about technical skills. Communication, documentation, consistency, and teamwork are equally important.
I am excited to continue learning from the WordPress community and to make meaningful contributions to the Spanish-speaking WordPress ecosystem.
I see this program as an opportunity to grow professionally while participating in a global project that makes technology more accessible to everyone.
